Striking it rich in 2006

January 1st, 2006

It occurred to me late today that I had not been shopping for the most important meal of the year…New Year’s Day. I’m not sure how widespread the tradition, but my folks taught me early in life that it was necessary to eat black eyed peas and collard greens in order to guarantee good financial fortune in the coming year. My Mom would say that the collard greens represented dollars while the black eyed peas represented coinage.

I guess the tradition is fairly well adopted in this area because at 5:30pm today, the grocery stores were completely sold out of both. In a last ditch attempt to claim whatever luck I could, I opted for mixed greens and cannelini beans. Maybe its not an exact science…maybe I’ll strike it rich in the foreign markets….who knows… In any case, it was a hell of a good meal and a great way to start what should hopefully be an amazing year.

Happy New Year!
